Dominion Energy
Outage and Customer App

One app for outages, bills and usage.
The challenge
When the power goes out, customers need to report it, see what is happening near them and know when service is coming back. Dominion Energy serves 3.6 million electric customers, and it also ran a separate app for each region, which meant different experiences and three apps to maintain.
The build
Native iOS and Android apps with a dedicated backend, connected to the utility's outage systems. Customers report an outage, follow outage status on a map, find nearby places that have power and get push notifications as service is restored. Shockoe then folded three regional apps into a single Dominion Energy app that adds billing, energy usage, account management and secure sign-in with biometrics, and planned the migration so existing customers moved across without starting over.
The result
One app now covers outage reporting, bill pay and energy usage for customers across the utility's territory, replacing three regional apps. It is designed to keep customers informed during an outage and to cut the effort of running several apps. The work earned Dominion Energy the RVATECH Gala Technology Innovator award for large companies.
