D.C. United
Blueberry Catch Challenge

Turning downtime into play.
The challenge
D.C. United wanted fans in the stands to do more than wait. The club needed an in-stadium activation for a premier sponsor that could grab attention during breaks in the action, work on stadium connectivity, and give fans a reason to visit the sponsor's concessions.
The build
Blueberry Catch, a mobile web augmented reality game. Fans open it from a QR code or link, with no app to download. Using the phone's front camera and face tracking, they open wide and catch falling blueberries in their mouth before one splats. When time runs out they get their score, a coupon for the stadium's concessions, and a way to share the game with friends. Shockoe designed the experience and led the project, and the game launched in about three weeks, in time for the home schedule.
The result
The game launched during the home season and gave the club and its sponsor a playable, shareable activation, with a coupon that sent fans to the concessions.
