A Better Mobile Experience

Shopmonkey helps its customers keep vehicles up and running. Whether it's cars, trucks, buses, or boats, Shopmonkey's tools are improving workflows and creating efficiencies for auto shops of all shapes and sizes, including large multi-location enterprises. To better meet the needs of these customers, the auto experts at Shopmonkey turned to the mobile experts at Shockoe for a fast tune-up of their mobile experience.

The Problem

Shopmonkey works with over 6,000 customers in the auto industry. From finding parts to tracking the progress on each order, their products are built to improve business operations.  Shopmonkey’s solutions include a web-based app and an iOS mobile app, but no Android app. To better meet the needs of all its clients Shopmonkey knew it was time to invest in an Android app to match its available iOS version.

Rather than creating a new separate app for Android users, the team chose to work with Shockoe to build a single React Native app to deliver a consistent, cross-platform experience across both iOS and Android. This would ensure that every shop and every user has access to the tools they need. Working together every step of the way resulted in a quick turnaround of the React Native app in just a few months, which was crucial for success.

Shopmonkey needed a partner who could not only deliver the new app quickly but who could be flexible to their changing technology. Shopmonkey’s internal teams were updating the back-end solutions at the same time as the new app was being built, requiring adaptation and flexibility during the app development process. Listening to Customers

One of Shopmonkey’s goals is to create operational efficiencies, streamlining the day-to-day tasks of managing an auto shop. After listening to Shopmonkey stakeholders and customers, the team prioritized mobile app features that would facilitate this goal and provide a consistent experience that felt similar to the current iOS app. Features like scanning license plates or VIN numbers, connecting with Carfax data, and easily searching for diagrams and parts all help mechanics simplify the paperwork process and improve shop operations.

In the auto industry, it’s important for shops to have quick and easy access to information about the vehicles and parts with which they work. The Shopmonkey mobile app provides seamless integrations with industry-leading tools like Carfax and MOTOR that put vast datasets of information at the user’s fingertips.

Relatedly, the mobile app allows mechanics to use the device camera to scan (via Optical Character Recognition, OCR, technology) a VIN number or license plate and automatically populate the value. In a matter of seconds, a Shopmonkey customer can capture a license plate, get the full history of that vehicle, and look up the diagram of a specific part for that vehicle that may require repair.

Optimizing the Experience

As our work together expanded, the Shockoe team turned to creating an optimized tablet experience. Mechanics on the floor were already using the iOS app with iPads, which provided a larger form factor and interface with which to manage their tasks. Therefore, it became clear that optimizing the app experience for tablets on iOS and Android would provide an even more usable experience for more customers and more devices.

What's Next

The new Shopmonkey app is set to go live in 2024. Throughout the development process, our collaboration together was a great example of combining effective planning and quick execution.
