From Insight to Product: Building the Foxwoods Digital Ecosystem

How we moved beyond an app and website refresh to build a unified, guest-centered digital ecosystem for Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Shockoe partnered with Foxwoods Resort Casino to build a unified digital ecosystem, not only an app and website refresh. The strategy connected guest planning, the on-site experience, and post-visit engagement around three pillars: Explore, Stay, and Play.

At Shockoe, we believed this called for a product-first mindset, not a project-first one.

What was the challenge: from fragmentation to flow?

Our discovery phase included on-site immersion and direct conversations with guests and staff. It surfaced a core challenge: a gap between the physical resort and its fragmented digital presence.

Guests felt overwhelmed by options, struggled to see the value of their loyalty, and used the app and website as separate, often competing, tools. The business needed a way to curate and merchandise its changing offerings, from restaurants to entertainment, in a way that felt exciting and intuitive.

Our strategic challenge had three parts:

  • Define the job of each platform. How could the website and the app work together as one system, each playing to its strengths?
  • Untangle the guest journey. How could we simplify decisions about booking, dining, and rewards?
  • Empower the business. How could we give the Foxwoods team a flexible platform for ever-changing offerings, without rigid templates?

What are the three pillars of the strategy?

We built the strategy around three pillars that defined the purpose of the digital experience:

  • Explore. Create excitement for what is possible before the guest arrives on the property.
  • Stay. Build loyalty with straightforward booking and a smooth on-site experience.
  • Play. Make it simple and rewarding to engage with the casino and the loyalty program.

These pillars informed our decisions, from the information architecture to feature priorities.

Why use the website as the planning hub and the app as the on-site companion?

We made a deliberate choice to give the two platforms different roles.

  • The website is the trip-planning tool. It carries immersive video, rich content, and an information architecture built for discovery and booking.
  • The app is the day-of companion. Its content is streamlined around utility: finding your way around the property, viewing your itinerary, and managing your rewards.

This “One Foxwoods” approach gives guests the right tool for the job, in a single journey that begins at home and continues on the phone. We describe the app side in more detail in how we elevated the Foxwoods experience.

How do flexible components help a resort merchandise its offerings?

For the business, we delivered more than a CMS. We built a custom Drupal instance with a library of flexible components, so the team is not locked into rigid templates. They get a canvas and a palette to build on-brand pages that can be scheduled, updated, and tailored to show off the resort’s offerings. The architecture behind this is covered in how a headless CMS powers the Foxwoods app.

What does the finished experience look like?

According to our case study, the result is a mobile and web experience that brings hotel reservations, Foxwoods Rewards, dining, shows, and gaming access into one place. Dining pages such as Cedars Steaks & Oysters carry menus and details in the same on-brand layout as the rest of the experience.

We have not published measured results for this project in this article. Our focus here is the strategy and what we built.

What did we take from this project?

In our view, a digital transformation is rarely only about technology. It depends on understanding the business, staying close to the user, and holding a clear strategy together across every touchpoint. Moving beyond a simple build to a connected ecosystem is how we approach work like this. You can see more of it in our work, and our services page explains how we work with hospitality teams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Explore, Stay, Play framework?

Three pillars that defined the purpose of the Foxwoods digital experience. Explore builds excitement before a guest arrives, Stay supports booking and the on-site experience, and Play makes engaging with the casino and the loyalty program simple and rewarding.

Why give the website and the app different jobs?

Guests use them at different moments. In our design, the website is the trip-planning hub, with rich content and booking. The app is the day-of companion, with streamlined content for navigating the property, viewing an itinerary, and managing rewards.

What does the CMS let the Foxwoods team do?

The team builds on-brand pages from a library of flexible components instead of fixed templates. Pages can be scheduled, updated, and tailored to feature the resort's current offerings.

Why take a product-first approach instead of a project-first one?

A project ends at launch. A product keeps changing with guests and with the business. In our view, planning for that from the start leads to platforms the client can keep evolving.

A unified digital experience connects your website's planning tools with an on-site app that guests actually use.
