UNITED NETWORK FOR ORGAN SHARING

Organ Tracking Solution

When it comes to essential health work, the United Network of Organ Sharing’s (UNOS) mission is critical: facilitating the matching and transportation of life-saving organ donations across the United States. But with dozens of organs to track at any given time, the UNOS team needed a medical app that would streamline the tracking process and increase transparency for their internal team and external partners. Working together with the internal team at UNOS, the Shockoe team created the solution: a web-based map and list tracking system to monitor organs in transit to ensure every organ arrives in time for life-saving care.

Meeting the UNOS Challenge

As the nation’s leader in organ transplant services, UNOS is responsible for handling the logistics of organ transport when a match is made—a critical step in ensuring life-saving care, but limited by organ viability. Rerouted or delayed organ transits were difficult to overcome in real time without critical information.

THE SOLUTION

In an effort to mitigate losses, UNOS set out to create a new system focused on transparency and easy-to-access information for their partners and recipients.

A Strategic Design for a Life-Saving App

Shockoe began with an in-depth discovery phase to understand the unique product requirements and what challenges it needed to overcome. Through stakeholder interviews and research, the identified goal was to answer 3 key questions:

  • How are delays and reroutes communicated
  • What information is conveyed to stakeholders?
  • How to present the process in a meaningful way?

The Shockoe team set out to develop a solution that provided clear and concise information sharing.

Not Your Average Medical App Development

Shockoe developed a product that runs through the UNOS website, displaying relevant, real-time information for organs in transit. The Organ Tracking Solution displays the data in two ways: the map view displays an easy-to-digest visual of the organ route and status; the list view provides a more granular level of detail, with an option to export, for each organ-in-transit. This ensures if an organ is delayed or rerouted, all stakeholders can easily recognize and respond appropriately.

A Solution Prioritized for Action

With two unique audiences, success relied on conveying detailed information quickly and visually.

Quick access to information—the UNOS team needed a solution that would allow them to distill all relevant information for the dozens of organs in transit at any time. Enter: List View.

A more visual approach—for stakeholders, speed was a priority, needing to easily see which type of organ is in transit, time in transit, and a clear visual representation of its intended route. Enter: Map View.

Focusing on the User Experience

Shockoe created UX design elements with a focus on intuition. Using dotted lines for in-transit organ routes and solid lines for completed routes enabled teams to quickly see organ location and status. Shockoe also implemented hover states to quickly display high-level information like origin, destination, and ETA.

Design elements like these were an easy way to give the level of transparency UNOS needed to increase awareness and quickly see the necessary information about the organ transportation process.
