DOW CHEMICAL

Optical Character Recognition

Dow is a global leader in materials science, delivering innovative and sustainable solutions across packaging, infrastructure, mobility, and consumer applications. With a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational efficiency, Dow continuously invests in digital tools to optimize manufacturing processes and minimize operational risks. They partnered with Shockoe to support these initiatives.

Digitizing and Enhancing Chemical Charging

In Dow’s chemical charging operations, verifying raw materials and charge locations was a largely paper-based process requiring multiple operators for validation. They trusted Shockoe to develop a solution that could be used within the chemical plant, reducing user error without compromising safety or creating additional work.

IMPACT

Designing an innovative yet easy-to-use solution.

Mitigating Operational Risk

Dow sought a digital solution that could integrate with its existing DeltaV automation system and warehouse operations to eliminate current challenges:

Manual validation inefficiencies—requiring a second person to confirm execution steps.
Increased risk of charge errors due to reliance on human verification alone.
Limited tracking and accountability throughout the charging process.
Potential safety concerns if incorrect materials were charged.

Optical Character Recognition Tool

Computer Vision-Based Location Scanning: Quickly validate task locations through image recognition.
OCR Product Label Scanning: Identify material IDs, lot numbers, and product names directly from labels.
Task Tracking: Provide operators with task lists to streamline workflow and decision-making.
Charge and Material ID Scanning: Ensure safety and quality compliance before initiating charging through workflow material validation.
Photo and Scan Log Error Extraction: Capture and store images and error logs for audit purposes.

Critical Improvements

By replacing manual steps with a streamlined, computer vision-powered platform, Dow expects to increase both efficiency and safety while empowering operators with modern tools.

  • Reduced Charge Errors & Enhanced Safety & Quality
  • Elimination of Paper Processes and Improved Data & Analytics
  • Scalability Across Sites
