General Electric – eDetailing App

The power of
mobile e-Detailing

Sales reps needed a better way to present GE’s Avance CS2 system — Shockoe delivered one.

Complex products made simple

Capturing the intricacies of a sophisticated machine can be daunting, especially in the absence of the machine itself. This is the challenge GE Healthcare faced in its efforts to present a new breathing system apparatus to the practitioners who would judge its suitability for their operating rooms.

Creating a powerful mobile sales tool

The company’s sales team needed to provide busy medical professionals with a more immediate experience of this product than pamphlets and slides could deliver. It was necessary to distill the device’s intricacies into an easily digestible – yet thorough – form of visualization that would allow users to access precisely the level of detail they required in order to assess its relevance for their purposes.

Why GE went mobile

The challenge was to produce an application that would condense complex product information into a readily consumable format and would be as dynamic as the product itself. Shockoe proposed developing a native application for iPad that would allow physicians to virtually explore the machine’s many facets.

“Exploiting the impressive videos and images that GE had captured of the machine felt like an impactful way for doctors and sales reps to interact with the product — we simply gave GE a better way of presenting and sharing that information.”

– Edwin Huertas, CEO, Shockoe

An e-detailing application emerged as the most suitable way of aiding salespeople and potential consumers alike to guide their own tour of product features and to easily drill down into individual points of interest.

Utilized Technologies

Online or offline, GE was ready

To address the issues of automatic asset updates and security concerns, Shockoe worked within GE’s infrastructure, utilizing their internal streaming server. With offline cache capability, compressed video files and other content could be uploaded in order to provide real-time updates without compromising the client’s information.

Curating a virtual relationship

Equipped with this e-detailing application, GE salespeople could let the new machine tell its own story. Users could view enhanced images, brief video clips, and detailed information about each of the machine’s features simply by tapping on different portions of the display. In short, Shockoe helped GE create a successful virtual relationship between medical practitioners and a sophisticated piece of equipment.

Lac-T – Field Support App

Healthy herds

Cows aren’t stationary. We believe the products farmers use to track them shouldn’t be either.

Free to Roam

Lactologic wanted to help dairy farmers improve profitability and sustainability while making it easier to monitor herd health. If the farmers are doing their work out in the field, that 15-year-old hulking PC tower isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Managing more than cows

Given the difficulties of managing so much data in the field, there was a clear need for a system that makes it easier for producers, vets, and technicians to track and record information about herds.

Any new mobile system would need to combine and augment the functionality of existing tools such as SigaDairy, DSA Dairy Producer and Agri-Lacta. Additionally, any new software would need to function while offline and in the field.

“Shockoe provided the additional expertise necessary to organize the project and help with its development. Their team created the structure of the app, then defined the steps needed to complete each element.”

– Knowledge Transfer Manager, University of Montreal

Farmers now have easy offline access to data, a management grid that displays upcoming events, and a complete history of each animal. With everything located in one mobile app, the days of balancing bulky hardware in the field are obsolete.

Utilized Technologies

No wifi? No problem.

The mobile version of Lac-T is complementary to the Desktop App, enabling users to enter health and reproduction events while in the field and sync that data once they return to their desktops.

Happy herds

There are now approximately 500 herds being managed on a daily basis (with an average of 65 cows per herd), which means there are a lot of cattle that are happier and healthier thanks to Lac-T.

Valacta & CanWest DHI – Dairy Farming Field Support App

Dairy. Data. Done.

A mobile field support solution to safeguard the dairy supply chain — from pasture to pasteurization.

Best hooves forward

Field support mobile apps were not considered an information-gathering solution for dairy farmers at Valacta Coop. With no digital platform of recording information in the field, farmers were relegated to outdated analog methods that left sizeable gaps in security, accuracy, and efficiency.

In the field

Before the first schematic was drawn, a group of designers and strategists from Shockoe flew to Quebec to meet in person with veterinarians, technicians, and farmers. The team even embedded themselves with the cattle to truly experience farm life.

The Shockoe team often met up in the evening, having spent the day in places and with people involved in the dairy supply chain. Team members would share what they had learned, while whiteboarding creative new solutions for data collection.

“Shockoe met their commitments and went above and beyond the original requirements. Their expert guidance on best practices was a strong contribution.”

– George Clyde, IT Manager, Valacta

It is now easier than ever for farmers and technicians to share valuable information about the well-being of their herds. The incorporation of mobile data collection protects the health of the Valacta livestock, the livelihood of the farmers, and ensures healthy, safe and great-tasting milk for consumers.

Utilized Technologies

No more heavy hardware

Now, dairy farmers in the field can input and review herd data from wherever they may be. No need for pen and paper notes that can easily be lost or damaged before making it into the hands of visiting technicians. Likewise, hefty external hard drives are no longer necessary, nor does the information need to be physically transported hundreds of miles to the Valacta headquarters in Montreal.

And finally, having this accurate, timely data means making sense of all this information is now easier than ever for scientists. This allows them to more effectively anticipate any changes that may affect the well-being of the cattle that could ultimately disrupt the dairy supply chain.

Moo’ving forward

In addition to creating a more effective way to capture data, Shockoe is now working with the University of Montreal and Valacta to find smarter uses for the collected data about cattle. The aim for the team is not just on prevention of contaminated milk from entering the supply chain; the emphasis is on detection — finding the first sign of sickness in the cattle so that appropriate care and treatment can be deployed effectively.

American Express – Mobile Governance & Strategy

Guiding AMEX
app innovation

We helped American Express book meeting spaces, generate ideas, and created a mobile playbook.

Mobile business-building

American Express is the world’s largest card issuer, a premium network for high-spending card members, a processor of millions of transactions daily, and a partner that provides business-building services to a worldwide merchant base.

AMEX focuses on customer satisfaction, striving to make it easier and more rewarding for consumers and companies to purchase the things they need. Doing that correctly takes a lot of people behind the scenes, and all of the need the right tools to do their job efficiently and effectively.

Innovating productivity

Internal stakeholders at American Express were requesting a large number of custom productivity apps, resulting in a significant production backlog. The AMEX End-user Computing & Mobility Team needed a strategic plan to meet existing app demand while properly planning for the production of future apps using new technologies (voice, connected devices, etc.).

Identify, design, and communicate

Shockoe worked with American Express to pinpoint the processes that would improve mobile delivery across the organization. These included:

• Creating a comprehensive mobile playbook to consolidate and communication standards, procedures, and best practices
• Building an app roadmap for critical apps required by the business
• Creating an Idea Generator app to spur innovation

“In Blue Work Space, we had the unique challenge of allowing users to book meeting rooms on the other side of the world in different time zones. This took the QA process to a whole different level, but the results were worth it.”

– Lead Developer, Shockoe

Our initial engagement with American Express was so successful that it spurred two additional projects, resulting in two unique apps that are reportedly, the most used apps within their organization.

Utilized Technologies

Assess, define, deliver

Shockoe conducted a current state mobile assessment, scrutinizing the existing level of mobile maturity and reviewed current standards and practices. Shockoe identified key areas to target for improvement and determined how best to communicate the result throughout the organization.

With this in place, Shockoe defined resources, budget, and timeline for the following governance initiatives: Mobile Advisory Council, Mobile Capability Center (MCC or center of excellence), resource plans, standards and processes for project initiation, technologies, design/dev/test practices, compliance, security, and support.

When we make apps we MEAN it

Shockoe’s engineering team leveraged the MEAN stack using modern platforms such as Angular 2 and Node JS. Shockoe also built the API that connects the new system to American Express’ existing database, allowing seamless integration with legacy back-end systems. Once the new app and system was built and tested, Shockoe provided guidance on deployment and mobile device management strategy.

JB Hunt – Drive, the Logistics and Transportation App

J.B. Hunt’s DRIVE
app delivers

Shockoed helped get drivers on the road and back to
their families, faster and safer.

Independent mobility

J.B. Hunt is one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in North America, offering transportation for full-truckload containerized freight throughout the lower 48.

They employ more than 20,000 people, including company employed and independently contracted drivers. Managing operations between that many employees requires a significant investment in mobile productivity applications.

Driving real-time business

J.B. Hunt’s drivers were using a third-party mobile app that included features that weren’t applicable to their daily tasks. The outdated app architecture meant that customization was difficult and impractical. Additionally, J.B. Hunt recognized a need to create separate group applications that could be used independently from one another.

Shockoe helped J.B. Hunt develop and deploy a set of tools for shippers and carriers that helps both parties monitor business in real-time. Shippers and carriers have access to business-critical information in an easy-to-use interface. The system also includes access to a wide range of reports and analytics to help analyze and improve business operations.

“The drivers were already accustomed to the existing application so I needed to be sensitive to not make drastic changes, while also uncovering and addressing opportunities for improvement.”

– UX UI Design Lead, Shockoe

Shippers now have a streamlined shipment management system across multiple transit types, a custom dashboard showing business-critical info, ability to track shipments, access to published rates, notifications via text and email, and online customer setup and support.

Utilized Technologies

A refreshing approach to mobile

Shockoe implemented a new approach for third-party libraries that included theming, auto-Refresh (implementing a SQLite/REST sync adapter), offline functionality, and data binding (backbone/Alloy). In addition to developing an independent library, our UX/UI team recreated the design of the application.

Agile in every way

Finally, we provided consultation as to how JB Hunt could work with integrated teams in an Agile process throughout the entire build: development, design and deploying the Titanium app.
