American Express

American Express

It takes a lot of people across the globe to process millions of financial transactions daily. Here’s how we helped American Express get their employees connected to make business better.

Background

American Express is the world’s largest card issuer, a premium network for high-spending cardmembers, a processor of millions of transactions daily, and a partner that provides business-building services to a worldwide merchant base.

AMEX focuses on customer satisfaction, striving to make it easier, safer and more rewarding for consumers and companies to purchase the things they need. Doing that correctly takes a lot of people behind the scenes, and all of them need the right tools to do their job efficiently and effectively.

Challenge

Internal stakeholders at American Express were requesting a large number of custom productivity apps, resulting in a significant production backlog. The AMEX End User Computing-Mobile Team needed a strategic plan to meet existing app demand while properly planning for the production of future apps using new technologies (voice, connected devices, etc).

Solution

Shockoe worked with American Express to identify, design, and communicate processes that would improve mobile delivery across the organization. This included:

  • Creating a comprehensive Mobile Playbook to consolidate and communicate standards, procedures, and best practices
  • Building an App Roadmap for critical apps required by the business
  • Creating an Idea Generator app to spur innovation

Results

Following our initial engagement with American Express, we have had two additional engagements, resulting in two apps and a strategic deliverable.

Process & Approach

Shockoe conducted a current state mobile assessment, assessing the existing level of mobile maturity and reviewing current standards and practices. From there, the team identified key areas to target for improvement and determined how best to communicate the results throughout the organization.

With this in place, Shockoe defined resources, budget, and timeline for the following governance initiatives: Mobile Advisory Council, Mobile Capability Center (MCC or center of excellence), resource plans, standards and processes for project initiation, technologies, design/dev/test practices, compliance, security, and support.

Features & Technologies

  • Digital Playbook
  • Series of Native Mobile Apps
  • Mobile Governing Board
  • Increased Dev Compliance
  • Native iOS and Android
  • Google Services
  • Azure Cloud
  • Push Notifications
  • MEAN Stack

“We have fully identified and engaged the Mobile Advisory Council and have had 3 meetings to date. We are getting the support we need. We have made some changes to the playbook based on user feedback. Overall, I think the program is going very well.”

ONEOK

ONEOK

ONEOK

Trying to get natural gas from point A to point B? Not the easiest thing in the world. Communicating and tracking asset information in the field? Even harder. Until now.

Background

ONEOK owns and operates one of the nation’s top natural gas liquids (NGL) systems and is a leader in the gathering, processing, storage and transportation of natural gas.

ONEOK’s operations include a 38,000-mile integrated network of NGL and natural gas pipelines, processing plants, fractionators and storage facilities in the Mid-Continent, Williston, Permian and Rocky Mountain regions.

Maintaining such a large geographic footprint requires a significant number of employees working in poorly connected remote areas. ONEOK needed a custom tool to manage assets and communicate business goals to field employees.

Challenge

ONEOK’s field employees were using paper work orders and hard copies of location and asset information. While onsite, they would update the work orders then return to an office to enter data into their Maximo desktop application. This often required waiting for online approvals to complete activities, significantly increasing the amount of time to completion. ONEOK challenged Shockoe to design and build a custom mobile app that would support their business processes and support offline asset management functionality.

Solution

ONEOK partnered with Shockoe to build a custom iPad application that could handle the heavy amounts of data needed to efficiently conduct field operations. The application supports multiple users per device, caches the most relevant data offline, allows for easy updates to work orders, validates business rules, and syncs back to Maximo. The app significantly improves employee productivity by detaching them from their bulky office desktops — this improves work and data quality and helps ONEOK to manage field assets far more effectively than before.

Results

Employees couldn’t wait to get their hands on the app as it rolled out. The application improves productivity and accuracy of reporting by allowing employees to complete reporting on-site rather than having to wait to get to a desktop application.

We continue to be a ONEOK partner, helping them mobilize new Maximo features and improve the app upon user feedback and create future integrations to Finance and Inventory data.

Process & Approach

Shockoe started from a cross-platform iOS prototype that helped prove the business value of a custom app. We worked closely with ONEOK business and technology teams to understand the field environment, business rules, Maximo technology, and to determine what features would improve the process.

Our experienced mobile team developed a technical design that supported complex sync rules and an intuitive user interface allowing users to quickly manage the most important information in the context of their current time, location, and task.

Features & Technologies

  • Offline management of work order, asset, and location data
  • Offline validation of Maximo business rules
  • Automatic or manual syncs based on network availability
  • Manage sync results and perform automatic retry
  • Role based user experience and business rules, with multiple users per device
  • View and update work order attachments, taking images in the field
  • Highlight important information based on the user, the time, and the location
  • IBM Maximo / TIBCO (Client Services)
  • Appcelerator Titanium for iOS
  • Backbone.js
  • SQLite

J.B. Hunt

J.B. Hunt

J.B. Hunt Drive

When you’re delivering a shipment of front-loading, energy efficient washing machines from Des Moines to Detroit, the last thing you need is a delay due to miscommunication. We help drivers get on the road and back to their families, faster.

Background

J.B. Hunt is one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in North America, offering transportation for full-truckload containerized freight throughout the lower 48.

They employ more than 20,000 people, including company employed and independently contracted drivers. Managing operations between that many employees requires a significant investment in mobile productivity applications.

Challenge

J.B. Hunt’s drivers were using a third-party mobile app that included features that weren’t applicable to their daily tasks. The outdated app architecture meant that customization was difficult and impractical. Additionally, J.B. Hunt recognized a need to create separate group applications that can be used independently from one another.

Solution

Shockoe helped J.B. Hunt develop and deploy a set of tools for shippers and carriers that helps both parties monitor business in real-time. Shippers and carriers have access to business critical information in an easy-to-use interface. The system also includes access to a wide range of reports and analytics to help analyze and improve business operations.

Shippers now have a streamlined shipment management system across multiple transit types, a custom dashboard showing business-critical info, ability to track shipments, access to published rates, notifications via text and email, and online customer setup and support.

Carriers have access to find loads, visibility to loads in transit and delivered, settlement reporting, and online carrier setup and support.

Results

Since our initial work with J.B. Hunt on the Drive app, we have completed an additional six engagements with three more projects beginning in early 2018. Our additional work has included strategic and design projects spanning several departments, including human resources, marketing, and IT.

Process & Approach

Shockoe implemented a new approach for third-party libraries that included theming, auto-Refresh (implementing a SQLite/REST sync adapter), offline functionality, and data binding (backbone/Alloy). In addition to developing an independent library, our UX/UI team recreated the design of the application. Finally, we provided consultation as to how JB Hunt could work with integrated teams in an Agile process throughout the entire build: development, design and deploying the Titanium app.

Features & Technologies

  • Customized interface per different role
  • Email, Text, and Push Notifications
  • Mobile Signature
  • Barcode Scanning
  • Android SDK
  • iOS SDK
  • Cross-platform SDKs
  • Backbone

Lac-T Field Support App

Lac-T Field Support App

Lac-T

There’s a cow in Western Canada named Buttercup. Here’s how we helped Buttercup’s ranchers track her details in order to keep her safe and healthy.

Background

Turns out that keeping tabs on Buttercup can be quite tricky, not to mention how tough it is to get the latest trends in herd management, production techniques, and disease diagnostics.

Lactologic wanted to help dairy farmers improve profitability and sustainability while making it easier to monitor herd health. If the farmers are doing their work out in the field, that 15-year-old hulking PC tower isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Challenge

Given the difficulties of managing so much data in the field, there was a clear need for a system that makes it easier for producers, vets, and technicians to track and record information about herds. Any new mobile system would need to combine and augment the functionality of existing tools such as SigaDairy, DSA Dairy Producer and Agri-Lacta. Additionally, any new software would need to function while offline and in the field. Lactologic challenged Shockoe to adapt their current herd management software for the mobile-modern dairy producer, vet, or animal technician.

Solution

Shockoe created Lac-T mobile, a mobile herd management application that allows for simple data entry and easy access to herd information. Several key features include offline access to data, a management grid that displays upcoming events, and a complete history of each animal. The mobile version of the software is complementary to the to Lac-T Desktop App, enabling users to enter health and reproduction events while in the field and sync that data once they return to their desktops.

Results

Lac-T users find it to be an essential part of their daily herd routine. There are now approximately 500 herds being managed on a daily basis (with an average of 65 cows per herd), which means there are a lot of cattle that are happier and healthier thanks to Lac-T.

Process & Approach

Shockoe worked with the technology team at Lactologic to build a cross platform solution deployed on Android and iOS that allows online and offline access to herd and cow analytics as well as dairy-specific data points which allow staff to better manage on-site decisions. Together with the current technology stack, the new apps have enriched Lactologic’s offerings by streamlining processes, increasing on-the-go farmer awareness, and allowing for more informed decisions in the field.

Features & Technologies

  • Synchronize Lac-T herd data on mobile and desktop
  • Record management for active animals
  • Record herd data and individual animal statistics
  • Entry of herd & herd health information
  • Offline access to herd and animal information
  • Filter and sorting options for specific herd information
  • Multi herd management
  • Multilingual (English/French)
  • Appcelerator platform
  • Apple iOS SDK
